Deacon, George Edward Raven, Sir, 1906-
Scientific and personal papers, 1921-1985.
Mainly scientific and administrative papers reflecting the different stages in Deacon's career, as a member of staff of the discovery investigations, working for the Admiralty during World War II, as director of the National Institute of Oceanography, 1949-1971, and retirement work on southern ocean data. Deacon, who was born in Leicester on March 21, l906, attended City Boys' School, Leicester, then King's College London to study chemistry. He graduated in 1926. In December 1927 he joined the discovery committee as sea-going chemist. Expeditions to Antarctic over the next 12 years. Wartime service with Admiralty researching submarine detection techniques and ocean waves and swell. In 1949 he was appointed first director of National Institute of Oceanogreaphy. Deacon served on numerous national and international committees as well as service with National Institute of Oceanography. He retired in 1971 and resumed work on his Antarctic data. He died in 1984. Fellow in the Royal Society, 1944; Knighted, 1971.
