The Visiting Scientist Program began in 1958 with financial support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), and was a joint endeavor between the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The AAPT is a professional society of teachers of physics in colleges, universities, and secondary schools, was established in 1930 to advance the teaching of physics and further the appreciation of the role of physics in society and culture. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics.
