The Nuclear Physics Project, undertaken in collaboration with the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS), studied the scientific and social development of the history of nuclear physics from its emergence as a major research field in the early 1930s through the subsequent development of subnuclear particle physics as a major field in the post-war years. During the course of the project two conferences were held, sponsored by the joint AIP-AAAS Committee on the History of Contemporary Physics, and the project conducted oral history interviews and identified source materials pertaining to the history of nuclear physics.
