Michigan Technological University was founded in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School.The name changed to the Michigan College of Mines, then Michigan College of Mining and Technology, and, in 1964, greatly expanded academic offerings propelled the school to its current designation as Michigan Technological University. In 1890, the first physics classroom was constructed, and the Arthur E. Haynes was hired as the first professor of physics. The B.S in physics began in 1946, Ph.D. program in physics was added to the curriculum in 2001.
