American Center for Physics
American Center for Physics (ACP) collection on the development of the ACP, 1992.
Five volumes documenting the formal, legal and contractual elements in the establishment and construction of the American Center for Physics. Two of the volumes deal with the purchase of the 24 acres of property, titled "American Center for Physics, Inc. - Headquarters Facility Site Acquisition"; the other three volumes, "Maryland Industrial Development Financing Authority," contain the documents associated with the financing of the purchase of the 24 acres and the construction of the building. Included in the five volumes are agreements among the three 'owning' societies, the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), about the shared control and occupancy of the building.
The American Center for Physics (ACP) was founded in 1992 to serve as the headquarters facility for three physics-based organizations: The American Institute of Physics, The American Physical Society, and the American Association of Physics Teachers, with a sublease agreement to the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. The ACP headquarters consists of a 24-acre site and a 120,000 square foot building located in College Park, MD, a short distance from the Washington Metro system and the University of Maryland flagship campus. Financing for the project was provided by State of Maryland tax-exempt revenue bonds. The building includes offices for society staff, and a suite of conference rooms to serve physics based meetings.
