Walter Stockmayer papers, 1901-2004.
The papers of Walter H. Stockmayer document his contributions to the field of chemistry and his professional life as a Professor of Chemistry from 1961 to 1979 at Dartmouth University. Contained within the collection is professional correspondence, articles, student papers, research notes, and photographs documenting his work in the field of chemistry and, in particular, with polymers and macromolecular science. Also contained in the collection are items relating to Stockmayer's personal life, including yearbooks from Rutherford High School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology; photographs documenting his time at Oxford University; books written by or about Professor Stockmayer; awards and honorary degrees; materials relating to his 65th and 80th birthdays; correspondence from his time at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Oxford; materials relating to the Appalachian Mountain Club (A.M.C.); passports and naturalization documents; news clippings; a collection of stamps; two large rolled photographs pertaining to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Class of 1935, and the text of an oral history interview.
Stockmayer earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the direction of J.A. Beattie in 1940. Became full professor in 1952. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1956. He joined the faculty at Dartmouth College in 1961 and, before his official retirement in 1979, served twice as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry. Professor Stockmayer died 9 May 2004.
