The University of Wisconsin - River Falls (UWRF) was founded in 1874 as a state Normal school. Physics was first taught in 1875, and the Physics Department was established in 1915. The physics major was approved in 1935 with the first physics major graduating in 1936. In 1965, Curt Larson became the first Ph.D. physicist to teach at River Falls. The post-Sputnik boom struck UW River Falls and the physics program rapidly expanded, in parallel with the overall growth of the University.
