Physics at Kenyon College, undated.
History of the Kenyon College Department of Physics, written by Thomas B. Greenslade, Jr. This document covers the evolution of physics programs, facilities and staff at Kenyon College from the science and natural philosophy classes offered in the mid-1800s, to the formal beginning of the physics major at Kenyon in 1902, and through the modern developments leading up to the program as it was in 2004.
Kenyon College was founded in 1824, in Gambier, Ohio. The college offered courses in physics since its formation, but the department was not formally begun until 1902. Housed in Rutherford B. Hayes Hall, the department boasts spacious x-ray and optics laboratories as well as five labs devoted to student-faculty research. The department offers two minors, in physics and astronomy, and together with the mathematics department is a major contributor to an interdisciplinary program in scientific computing. In addition, the department offers courses designed for non-science majors, including astronomy and geology.
