Historical account of the Stanford University Department of Physics faculty, programs and facilities, from 1891 through 2004. Items include faculty listings, information on the start of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), as well as brief essays on the formation and evolution of the physics program at Stanford. Also includes a historical slideshow commemorating the demolition of the Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory in 2007.
Stanford University opened in 1891, with the Department of Physics among the very first departments at the new University. In its first years, the Department of Physics offered five courses in physics - laboratory and classroom. Today, in addition to research in the Physics Department and at SLAC, graduate students have access to research projects in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and collaborative efforts with the Medical School.
