Oregon State University Department of Physics histories, 2008.
A collection of essays and photographs detailing the history and evolution of the Oregon State University (OSU) Department of Physics programs and facilities. Items include: department history from 1908 through 1979; photographs from 1923-1934, 1936, and 1969; and accounts of the first OSU seismograph and the start of the OSU cyclotron. Contributors include James Brady, former professor of physics at OSU.
The Department of Physics at Oregon State University (then Oregon Agricultural College) was started in 1908 with the appointment of Dr. Willibald Weniger as Assistant Professor of Physics by President William Jasper Kerr. Prior to that time two courses in elementary physics were given by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The courses in physics offered in 1908-1909 were: 1 and 2. Physics, and 3 and 4. Physics. The Physics offices and laboratories were located in Mechanical Hall (now Apperson Hall) where they remained until 1928 when the new Physics building (now Covell Hall) was completed.
