British Broadcasting Corporation.
BBC written archives, 1922-[ongoing].
Contains both primary (correspondence, programmes, and engineering and telecommunications files) and secondary materials (scripts of broadcasts, both television and radio, about science/scientists, news bulletins, press cuttings about broadcasts, LISTENER reviews/articles, etc.) Primary material includes files of correspondence with, and BBC internal correspondence about, many scientists. These files of correspondence deal, in the main, with contributions, or proposed contributions, to BBC broadcasts. The files vary considerably in their content. Much of the material in these files is quite prosaic, merely dealing with the arrangements for the broadcasts. A good deal of the correspondence, however, goes beyond this. Amongst the contributors are files for and about scientists such as: Sir E.V. Appleton; Sir Henry Bragg; Sir Lawrence Bragg; Martin Ryle; Sir James Jeans; Otto Frisch; Erwin Schrd̲inger; Niels Bohr; Sir Cyril Hinshelwood. Several other classes of papers held here will contain correspondence with individual scientists or scientific organisations. These Written Archives Centre classes include those dealing with specific programmes such as RADIO TALKS: R51, RADIO OUTSIDE BROADCASTS: R30, TV OUTSIDE BROADCASTS: T14, and with general themes, such as POLICY; R34, and ADVISORY COMMITTEES: R6. Organisations mentioned here include the National Physical Laboratory, the Cavendish Laboratory, and the Royal Society. Lastly, the Centre holds some sequences of files which record certain of the BBC's engineering activities and its technical co-operation with other organisations involved in telecommunications. Some of the Centre's holdings will, of course, be mixtures of primary and secondary sources. An example of this might be the BBC Audience Research reports on the public's reaction to, and appreciation of, a particular broacast or series of broadcasts.
