Nick Holonyak (1928- ) Electrical engineer. Received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1954 and has been Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics there since 1963. He invented the first visible LED in 1962 while working as a consulting scientist at General Electric Company Laboratory.
