University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Bardeen Quadrangle dedication ceremony [videorecording], 2004 October 14.
Video recording of the dedication ceremony of the Bardeen Quadrangle of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) held on October 14, 2004. The ceremony was hosted by David Daniel, Dean of the College of Engineering, UIUC, and was attended by members of the Bardeen family, as well as Bardeen's peers at the UIUC. Topics discussed include Bardeen's contributions to science, his influences on and relationships with staff at UIUC, and the effects of his solid-state and conductivity work on the world at large. Includes reminiscences by Nick Holonyak, and from various faculty members from the UIUC Schools of Engineering and Mathematics.
Chartered as the Illinois Industrial University, the University opened for business in 1868. Renamed the University of Illinois in 1885, it is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions created after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862. The name of the university was changed to The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1982, to establish a separate identity for the campus within the University of Illinois system. UIUC is regarded as a world-leading magnet for engineering and sciences, both applied and basic.
