Panofsky, Wolfgang K. H. (Wolfgang Kurt Hermann), 1919-2007
Wolfgang Panofsky papers, 1932-2008.
Topics include his undergraduate work at Princeton University, graduate work at the California Institute of Technology and early career at Los Alamos and the University of California at Berkeley. Beginning in 1951, his work at Stanford University is documented, including early work on arms control as well as teaching and departmental files. Project "M" (later renamed Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) documents date from 1957 to 1962, when the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center opened. SLAC papers include administrative, travel, research and collaboration with other labs. Simultaneously, the collection documents his science policy work with such organizations as Energy Research Advisory Board, High Energy Physics Advisory Panel, National Academy of Sciences, Center for International Security and Cooperation , American Association for the Advancement of Science, The American Nuclear Society and the JASON Defense Advisory Group as well as his expertise with AntiBallistic Missile Hearings, Geneva Conferences on Discontinuance of Nuclear Weapons Tests, Civil Defense, Strategic Arms Limitations Treaties, Superconducting Super Collider, other Department of Energy and major international physics research sites and Amaldi and Pugwash conferences. The papers of Panofsky's 1974 presidency of The American Physical Society are in the collection. Finally, much of his professional correspondence, awards, photographs and publications are also in the SLAC Archives and History Office.
