The collection includes scientific correspondence, observations, photographs, administrative papers, and projects. The collection also includes manuscripts of the observations performed in the other observatory of Bologna which was founded in 1985. Among the scientists represented are: I. Calandrelli, P. Caturegli, G. Ceschi, F. Dominco, F. Flora, G. Horn D'Arturo, L. Jacchia, Eustachio Manfredi, J. Michez, G. Moratti, O. F. Mossotti, A. Palagi, S. Petronio, D. Piani, R. Pirazzoli, M. Rajna, L. Respighi, A. Saporetti, V. M. Stancari and E. Zanotti.
The Observatory in Bologna was founded in 1725 by the Accademia delle Scienze. In the 19th century it was embodied in the University and took the name Istituto di Astronomia. It has been called Dipartimento di Astronomia since 1983.
