Charles S. Peirce notebook, 1880.
Collection consists of one bound holographic notebook of philosopher and mathematician, Charles S. Peirce. The notebook contains a catalog of books on logic and scholastic philosophy from Peirce's personal library. Peirce also noted the estimated value of each title. Most likely, Peirce compiled the notebook at a time when he hoped to find a buyer for his library. Most of the books listed in this notebook were acquired by The Johns Hopkins University in 1881.
Physicist and mathematician. B.S. degree (1859) and M.A. degree (1862) from Harvard and was later employed, 1859-1860 and 1861-1891, by the U.S. Coast Survey where his discoveries in math, astronomy, and physics led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1877. Peirce lectured at The Johns Hopkins University in logic, 1879-1884, and presented a lecture series in philosophy at Harvard and the Lowell Institute.
