The collection includes general administrative records, documentation of division and committee activity, correspondence, memoranda, and documentation of member societies and affiliated institutions, including the following highlights: the 40th and 50th Anniversaries of AIP; an effort to create a publishing labor union at AIP; files documenting the actions of AIP's Member Societies, with the most detailed records belonging to the American Physical Society (APS); the growth and technological advancements of the AIP Publishing Division, including the development of a policy for page charges in scientific publishing, the addition of electronic resources like Pi-Net, and the expansion of international translation journals. This collection also records the move of the AIP publication production facilities from New York City to Woodbury, New York and contains the beginnings of the discussion of relocating the AIP headquarters to Washington, DC.
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a not-for-profit membership corporation which began in 1931 for the purpose of promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare. Its members are leading societies in the fields of physics and astronomy, and its activities include providing services to its member societies in publishing, finance, and education.
