"Oceanography: The Making of a Science" [videoreordings], 2000.
This collection consists of videotapes of the proceedings of the "Oceanography: The Making of a Science" colloquia series and videotape interviews of leading oceanographers and scholars produced as the oral history component of the colloquia. Included is the complete and unedited raw footage of more than 100 colloquia presentations and 45 oral history interviews. Printed material accompanying the collection consists of an overview booklet with essays from representatives of the sponsoring organizations, programs for each of the colloquia, and a paper presented at the University of Washington regional colloquia by Oregon State University President Emeritus John V. Byrne on the development of oceanographic studies at OSU. The oral history tapes include interviews with OSU oceanographers John V. Byrne and Larry Small, as well as Warren Wooster, Karl Banse, Ross Heath, Joe Creager, Maurice Rattray, Norbert Untersteiner, Jim O'Brien, Harry DeFerrari, Eric Kraus, Art Myrberg, Tony Sturges, Claes Rooth, Joseph Prospero, Gote Ostlund, Bill Benson, Harding Michel, Ed Goldberg, Fred Spiess, Bill Nirenberg, Joe Reid, Walter Munk, Doug Inman, Ed Friedman, Jim Stewart, Dale Leipper, Robert Reid, Art Maxwell, Feenan Jennings, Hugh McLellan, James Coleman, Admiral J. Edward Snyder Jr., Robert Frosch, Gordon Hamilton, Robert Abel, John Coleman, Marie Tharp, John Knauss, Allan Robinson, David Ross, Richard Backus, Nick Fofonoff, Bill Watkins, Carl Bowin, and Admiral James D. Watkins. Interviews were conducted by OSU faculty member Ron Doel, Keith Benson, Gary Weir, Naomi Oreskes, Ron Rainger, Tanya Levin, and Frank Taylor.
"Oceanography: The Making of a Science" program was sponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment. It consisted of five regional and one national colloquia held from January through March 2000 and featured presentations on historical and contemporary topics in oceanography. The regional colloquia were held at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA); the University of Miami (Miami, FL); Scripps Institution of Oceanography (San Diego, CA); Texas A&M University (College Station, TX); and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Woods Hole, MA). The national colloquia was held at the U.S. Senate Hart Building in Washington, D.C.
