These records include administrative files, student records, and correspondence documenting the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Physics, primarily from the 1920s through the 1940s. The correspondence in the collection is between the employee/correspondent and Dr. Joseph H. Howey, head of the Physics Department during this time, discussing topics such as biographical data on employees, job inquiries, recommendations for employment, moving arrangements, and salary information. Also included in the collection is administrative correspondence of J. B. Edwards during the years 1932-1936. Student records from 1919-1920 comprise the remainder of the collection. These files include student grades, class rolls, examinations, and lab grades.
The Physics Department was one of the original eight departments created when Georgia Tech opened in 1888. The first chair was Isaac Hopkins, who went on to become Georgia Tech's first president.
