American Institute of Physics. Center for History of Physics. Einstein Centennial Project
AIP Center for History of Physics Einstein Centennial Project records, 1978-1987.
Materials relating to the Einstein Centennial celebration held by the American Instutite of Physics (AIP) in 1979, to celebrate the anniversary of Albert Einstein's birth. The manuscript portion of this collection contains administrative records from the coordination of the celebration and from the design of the poster series. The poster series consists of 18 original posters designed specifically for the centennial celebration. The oversize container contains two copies of the 18 original full-color posters, along with an additional copy of each poster mounted on foamcore board. The posters contain text about Einstein, timelines of his work and many photographs and illustrations.
The Center for History and Philosophy of Physics was established as a division of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) in 1965 by the joining of the AIP's Project on the History of Recent Physics in the United States (started in 1961) and the AIP Niels Bohr Library for History of Physics (opened in 1962). Its purpose is to aid in the efforts of the scholarly community to document, investigate, and understand the nature and origin of developments in 20th century physics and their impact on society. In 1972 the name was changed to the Center for History of Physics.
