1937 to 2007: seventy years of nuclear physics at Notre Dame, 2007.
This article describes the history of nuclear hysics programs at the University of Notre Dame. Topics discussed include: the Manhattan Project; Cornelius Browne; Emerson Funk; cooperation from the Office of Naval Research; Jim Kolata; the formation of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA); and the changes in the administration of the Nuclear Science Laboratory (NSL, formerly the Nuclear Structure Laboratory).
The Institute for Structure and Nuclear Astrophysics (ISNAP) is the new name of the Nuclear Science Laboratory (NSL)at the University of Notre Dame. The nuclear physics program at the University of Notre Dame began in 1937, and the laboratory at Notre Dame continues low energy nuclear research today as one of the oldest nuclear laboratories in the United States.
