Wayne Osborn papers, 1959-2010, undated.
The Osborn papers, 1965-2010, and undated (2 cubic feet), consist mainly of his personal work and research correspondence, notes, and data, published articles, teaching materials, and biographical information. His research proposals, reports, notes, articles, photographs and other related materials on the Coleman Meteorite, and his research projects at both the Hubble Space Telescope and at the National Underground Research Observatory (NURO) at Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff (Ariz.) are documented in this series. Also in this series are Osborn's correspondence developing an agreement with NURO to bring CMU students there to conduct astronomical observations, 1993-2001, as well as his professional and research correspondence with Dr. Francisco Fuenmayor of the Universidad de Los Andes in Merida, Venezula, 2000-2001, and his correspondence with Juan Jose Claria, 1976-1979. The Claria correspondence is in Spanish. The CMU Materials, 1959-2006 (approximately 1 cubic foot), consists mainly of memos, meeting minutes, reports, and other materials of a substantial nature, documenting changes in policy, procedure or interests at CMU, accreditation issues, various policies, legal opinions, and documentation of the search for a new provost in 2002. The CMU Physics Department Materials, 1968-2006 (approx. 3.5 cubic ft.) consists mainly of departmental and various committee meeting minutes, 1976-2006; student manuals and study guides for astronomy and physics classes mainly taught by Osborn, 1976-2005 (Scattered); department publications, brochures, and strategic planning documents; and the departmental constitution and bylaws. There are also a few materials Osborn helped generate such as the Off-Campus Observatory Proposal and Study, 1968-1976, his Colloquia and Seminar Notes, 1980-2006, and various departmental program reviews, 1981-1998 (Scattered), and proposals. Miscellaneous materials complete the collection.
Osborn (born Oct. 8, 1942) earned an A. B. in Astronomy from the University of California-Berkeley (1964), a M.A. in Astronomy from Wesleyan University (1967), and a Ph. D. in Astronomy from Yale University (1971). In 1976 he was hired as an assistant professor in the Physics Dept. at CMU. Osborn was promoted to Associate Professor in 1978 and to full Professor in 1985. In July 2006 Osborn became the Vice Provost for Resarch in CMU's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, where his work focuses on managing CMU's external grants and contracts and internal funding programs.
