Founded in 1959 by the State University of New York at Buffalo, with the support of the Atomic Energy Commission and the New York State Legislature. In 1972, the University withdrew and the center's title changed to the Nuclear Science and Technology Facility. In 1985, the Buffalo Materials Research Corporation took control, changing the name to Buffalo Materials Research Center. The major activities of the center included radiation damage research, radioisotope production, neutron activation analysis, and the training of university students and personnel.
