University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography oral history interviews, 1999.
Contains interviews with the following individuals. Nelson Marshall, interviewed July 15, 1999. Dr. Marshall began his career at the Fish Oceanographic Laboratory in 1959 as it was entering into its transitional phase to becoming the Graduate School of Oceanography under the Directorship of John Knauss in 1960. Dr. John Knauss, interviewed July 15-16, 1999 (3 videocassettes). Dr. Knauss was appointed the first Dean of the Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) in 1962. Knauss served as Provost for Marine Programs from 1969 to 1982. Knauss was instrumental in attaining Sea Grant College status for University of Rhode Island and served as the first president of the Sea Grant College Association. Senator Claiborne Pell , interviewed July 16, 1999 (2 videocassettes). Pell helped start the GSO program and worked with Dean Knauss on the passage of National Sea Grant legislation. Marilyn and Joe Monroe, interviewed July 23, 1999. Marilyn is the daughter of Charles Fish, who founded the oceanographic program in 1936. She and her husband were students in the program in the early 1950's.
The University of Rhode Island's oceanography program was founded in 1936 as the Narragansett Marine Laboratory (NML). It was renamed the Fish Oceanographic Lab in 1960 and reorganized as the Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) in 1961.
