University of Rhode Island. Graduate School of Oceanography.
University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography records, 1935-1998.
These records include the records of the Narragansett Marine Laboratory and its successor, the Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO). These records mostly document the administrative, personnel, programmatic, and physical evolution of the GSO from the 1950's to the 1990's. Few documents from earlier decades are extant. The records were deposited in the Special Collections at the University of Rhode Island Library in December 2000. Prior to their transfer, the records were stored in a warehouse. The records are in excellent condition, although a few documents exhibit rust stains from paper clips and staples.
The University of Rhode Island's oceanography program was founded in 1936 as the Narragansett Marine Laboratory (NML). It was renamed the Fish Oceanographic Lab in 1960 and reorganized as the Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) in 1961.
