This volume is a continuation of the history of the American Institute of Physics covering William Koch's tenure as director during the years 1967-1987. The story of the first quarter century of AIP was covered in an article by Harry A. Barton published in Physics Today (Volume 9, Number 1, pages 56-66, January 1956). Elmer Hutchisson also composed a draft history titled "The Story of the American Institute of Physics, 1956-1966" (IH4088).
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a not-for-profit membership corporation which began in 1931 for the purpose of promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare. Its members are leading societies in the fields of physics and astronomy, and its activities include providing services to its member societies in publishing, finance, and education.
