The Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) was formally established on 1 January 1946 when the wartime Radiation Laboratory (radar research and production facility) located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology closed and MIT took over the administration of its Division of Basic Research for the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC). On 1 July 1946 all association with the NDRC came to an end, and MIT took sole responsibility for the laboratory. Directors of RLE included Julius A. Stratton, 1946-1949; Albert G. Hill, 1949-1952; Jerome Wiesner, 1952-1961; Henry Zimmermann, 1961-1976; Peter Wolff, 1976-1981; Jonathan Allen, 1981-2000; and Jeffrey H. Shapiro, 2000-present (as of 2001).
