The bulk of the collection is composed of correspondence reflecting Saxon's activities from the late 1970s to 1991, which include his service as director of the Eastman Kodak Company (1983-1990), the Museum of Science Corporation (Boston, Mass., 1984-1991), and the Houghton Mifflin Company (1983-1990); his trusteeship at Atlanta University (1985-1987); his participation in technical advisory committees for the Ford Motor Company (1979-1992); and his work with government institutions including the National Academy of Sciences, the National Institutes of Health, and the Institute of Medicine. He chaired the National Research Council's Exploratory Committee on the Future of Nuclear Power in 1984, and the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment's Advisory Panel on Technology and the American Economic Transition (1983-1987). Correspondence in the collection also documents Saxon's involvement in the New England Board of Higher Education, the Stanford [University] and the Schools project, the Lehigh University Visiting Committee on University Management, and other groups. Also included are correspondence, published reports, and meeting minutes of the Business-Higher Education Forum, of which Saxon was a member from 1984 to 1990, and the Massachusetts Centers of Excellence Corporation, of which Saxon was director from 1985 to 1990. Copies of Saxon's speeches, publications, and related correspondence, as well as a cassette tape of an interview of Saxon for the January 1985 issue of Technology Review, the MIT alumni magazine, are also included in the collection.
