Edward Mills Purcell (1912-1997). Harvard Ph.D. 1938; became an instructor in Physics at Harvard, until he joined the Radiation Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which was organized in 1940. He became a professor of Physics at Harvard, and held the Gerhard Gade University Professorship. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1952.
