Abbe, Cleveland, 1838-1916.
Cleveland Abbe papers, 1851-1952.
Collection consists of papers (1851-1952) of meteorologist and astronomer, Cleveland Abbe. Included are correspondence, manuscripts, reports, meteorological observations, reprints, drawings, and lecture notes. The bulk of the material (1874-1904) is drawn from the years when Abbe served with the Weather Service, U.S. Signal Corps. Correspondence reveals Abbe's interest in the work of his colleagues and his accumulation of information on climatology worldwide. Included also is the unpublished manuscript in translation of Alexander J. Woeikoff's "Climates of the Earth." Subjects of Abbe's notes and research include barometric observations, weather forecasts, the solar eclipse of 1900, a meteor of 1873, and a hurricane in Cuba, 1888.
