Stephen Alexander collection, 1827-1882.
Consists chiefly of correspondence between Alexander and Charles Babbage, Alexander Dallas Bache, Francis Baily, James Challis, Caleb Smith Green, John S. Hart, Joseph Henry, Benjamin F. Joslin, John T. Nixon, and William S. Stryker. The collection also contains a journal of a sea voyage, dated June 28 to August 6, 1860; a certificate of membership to the American Philosophical Society, signed by Bache; and handwritten notes of an address before the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Astronomer. Education: Union College, Princeton University. Professional experience: Professor of astronomy, Princeton University; President, American Association for the Advancement of Science (1859), National Academy of Sciences (1862). Research interests: the atmospheres of Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter, and solar eclipses.
