Bender, P. L. (Peter Leopold), 1930-
Oral history inteview with Peter L. Bender, 1987 May 12.
Peter Bender discusses his career in precision measurements at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) in Boulder, Colorado and his work at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). He talks about his work in optics, working with students at the University of Colorado (Boulder), the project to put reflectors on the moon (the retroreflector package was included on Apollo XI). Bender also discusses his work to test gravitational theory, the Laser Geodynamic Satellite and his interest in geophysical measurements.
Ph.D. Princeton University, 1956. Stratton Award, National Bureau of Standards, 1962; Fellow, American Physical Society, American Geophysical Union, Optical Society of America. General interests are in the use of precision distance measurements in astrophysics, gravitational theory and planetary studies.
