Interviewee discusses his career at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) which included work in electron physics, metrology, and manufacturing. He recalls his efforts in designing and building an electron interferometer, his "cool electrons" work with Chris Kuyatt, the contributions to x-ray spectroscopy under Ugo Fano's direction and Russell Young's scanning tunneling microscope. He also recalls his time as Acting Chief of the Mechanics Division of NBS, and his task to revolutionize the division. John talks about the 1978 reorganization of NBS and his contributions to the Automated Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF).
