Ames Research Center archives reference collection, 1939-1998.
The Archives Reference Collection in the NASA Ames History Office provides a sampling of materials from the Center's past. The early years of the Laboratory are best covered in the series titled Overviews and Oversize. These series hold photographs and news clippings from Ames years under the NACA, as well as booklets which describe the Laboratory for its Annual Inspections. This collection holds documents from Ames work on Apollo, Pioneer, and Biosatellite. From the 1980s forward, the Subject series contains some key documents in infrared astronomy, artificial intelligence, and technology utilization. The best sources of information about Ames since 1980 are the Ames Research and Technology (R & T) Annual Reports (which describe research projects in summary but technical terms). The Reports, Reviews, and Surveys series also includes material from the 1990s about the role of minorities at the Center, as well as Ames' position in the local community and its growing concern with environmental issues. The official archive of NASA Ames is deposited with the National Archives and Records Administration--Pacific Region and the Federal Records Center (San Bruno). This collection is a result of some short-term systematic collecting efforts. About half the materials are of antiquarian interest and were given haphazardly to the Main Library by various Ames employees and retirees.
