Field, William O. (William Osgood), 1904-
William O. Field papers, 1890-1994.
The William O. Field Papers consist of diaries, notes, photographs, correspondence, tables, graphs, and other manuscript and biographical materials, all relating to the life and activities of glaciologist William O. Field. The papers provide a major record of glacier observations throughout the world with an emphasis on Alaska, and also document much of the history of twentieth century glaciology. The bulk of the material in this extensive collection was organized by Field for the purpose of future access; for example, researchers will find not only Field's own observations and photographs, but full descriptions of his colleagues' photographs which were retained in the World Data Center Collection at the American Geographical Society. Fields papers also reflect his role as a repository for the papers, maps, and photographs of the glaciological community of the last century, including Harry Fielding Reid, Lawrence Martin, and Ralph S. Tarr.
