Biographical information, writings including masters thesis and Ph. D. dissertation, speeches, experiments, problems, laboratory manuals and notes, awards and correspondence relating to Smith's teaching career at Cornell College and DePauw University and to his research in physics. American physicist. Smith was born in Iveyville, Iowa. The family later moved near Corning, Iowa. Education: Knox College, Galesburg, Ill.; graduated 1908 with a major in Latin and Mathematics. After shifting his interests to the sciences, received physics scholarship to The University of Illinois, where received his master in physics, 1909; Ph. D.; 1914. After ten years at Illinois, he taught at DePauw University, 1925-1952. He received two national honors for his work in science education: Oersted Medal from the American Association of Physics Teachers, 1950; Golden Key Award from the American Association of School Administrators, 1959. He died in Everett, Washington.
