Richard Setlow chronicles his scientific career in detail, beginning with his education in physics, his transition to biophysics and DNA repair, to his most recent work on carcinogenesis and space biology. His detailed description of his scientific work conveys his achievement in the field of DNA repair, mutagenesis, and carcinogenesis. He also provides perspective on a scientific life during the cold war era by reflecting on his transition from an academic institution to national labs. Other topics include: the establishment of the Department of Biophyiscs at Yale; Ernest Pollard; and the director of the Biology Division at ORNL, Alexander Hollaender.
Richard B. Setlow (1921-), Physicist (biophyiscs, cancer research). Recieved his Ph.D. in Physics at Yale University in 1947, was jointly appointed as an assistant professor at the Department of Physics and the Biophysics Program at Yale. Setlow taught Biophysics until 1961 when he left for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 1974, Setlow moved to the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) where he is still active in DNA repair and ultraviolet radiation research. Setlow was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1973, and became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1988.
