The Collected Materials of Harry Fielding Reid, 1870-1910.
This Collected Materials of Harry Fielding Reid include field notebooks from two glacial exploration expeditions (1890, 1892), glass plate negatives from those exhibitions as well as prints of the negative, manuscript papers, notes and computations from Glacier Bay, drafts of papers, correspondence, proofs of maps, photographs, sketches, and other materials. Reid's collection of photographs represent pioneering glaciological data gathering.
Harry Fielding Reid (1859-1944) was one of the first American geophysicists. Better known for his work on earthquakes and "elastic rebound" theory, Reid's early work concentrated on glaciology. Reid attended Johns Hopkins University (PhD, 1885), then continued his studies of glaciology in Alaskan and Eurpean glaciers. Achievements: In 1892, National Geographic magazine published his map of Muir Glacier (AK); performed analysis of the Forno Glacier in the Alps (horizontal and vertical changes; internal structure); President of the International Glacier Commission from 1903-1906.
