Cohen, Morris, 1911-2005
Morris Cohen papers, 1936-1990.
Cohen's career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is documented in correspondence and minutes of meetings of the MIT Materials Processing Center and other MIT committees including the MIT Task Force on Materials. Correspondence, contracts, technical reports, and proposals record his research at MIT. Cohen's research on martensitic and displacive transformation, aging and tempering of steel, and structure and property relationships of steel is documented in correspondence and consulting reports for companies including ABEX, Miller's Falls Company, and Sylvania Electric Products. Correspondence and minutes of meetings record his involvement in professional organizations including the American Society of Metals (ASM), the American Institute of Metals Engineers (AIME), and the Committee on the Metallurgical Profession. Cohen's editorial work for the Addison-Wesley Publishing Company is documented in correspondence and drafts of manuscripts.
Morris Cohen, 1911- , S.B. 1933, and Sc.D. 1936 in metallurgy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was appointed instructor of metallurgy at the Institute in 1936, assistant professor in 1937, associate professor in 1941, and professor of physical metallurgy in 1946. He later became the Ford Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in 1962, Institute Professor in 1975, and Institute Professor emeritus in 1982. During World War II, Cohen was associate director of research activities for the Manhattan Project carried out at MIT, while also serving as an official investigator for the United States Office of Scientific Research and Development. Cohen's research focused on the properties of iron and steel, including martensitic transformation, the process on which steel hardening is based. He was a consultant to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the U.S. Department of Defense. Cohen also served as a consultant to many U.S. corporations including the American Brakeshoe Company (later ABEX Corporation), U.S. Steel Corporation, Miller's Falls Company, and Sylvania Electric Products. He wrote or edited nearly 300 articles and books including Heat Treatment of High Speed Steel (1946), which he wrote, and Materials Science and Engineering: Its Evolution, Practice and Prospects ([1978?]), which he edited.
