Subject files, research notes, correspondence, manuscripts, teaching files, committee records, photographs and other material collected and generated by Henry William Menard. Includes material documenting Menard's books, The Ocean Truth (1986) and Islands (forthcoming). Files documenting The Ocean Truth include correspondence exchanged by Menard and his colleagues during the period 1955-1986 on the subject of the plate tectonic revolution in the field of geology. The accession includes over twelve linear ft. of teaching files, subject files, and material documenting expeditions in which Menard participated.
Marine geology professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1955 until his death. He served on several committees of the National Academy of Sciences relating to environmental issues during the 1970's. A very active field geologist, Menard made over 1,000 aqua-lung dives and participated in 20 oceanographic expeditions. He wrote text books about oceanographic expeditions, the sociology of science, and also wrote popular accounts of marine geology. He was a vociferous and early proponent of plate tectonics. Menard served as director of the United States Geological Survey from 1978 to 1981.
