The collection consists of the personal and professional papers of Captain James Percy Ault while he was an employee of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. It includes correspondence, reports, photos, albums, newspaper clippings, and ephemera.
J.P. Ault was a geophysicist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Department of Terrestrial Magnetism from 1904 until his death in 1929. He served on numerous geomagnetic survey expeditions and commanded the Institution's research vessel "Carnegie" from 1914 to 1929, when the ship burned and sank at Apia, Samoa.
