Includes handwritten letters and postcards relating to Schott's attempts/experiments to develop new optical and technical glass; establishment and beginnings of Schott & Gen.'s Glastechnischen Laboratoriums (Glass Technological Laboratory) in Jena, Germany.
Schott studied chemistry, physics, and mineralogy in Aachen, W rzburg, Leipzig; received Dr. phil. in Jena, 1875. Established the Glass Technological Laboratory Scott & Assoc. (Glastechnischen Laboratoriums Schott & Gen.), in 1884, in Jena with Ernst Abbe and Carl and Roderich Zeiss. Inventor of new optical glass types, new thermometer glass and Borosilicate glass. Founder of modern glass technology (and the German Glass Technological Society, 1925). Ernst Abbe (1840-1905), physicist and social reformer, is known as the founder of theoretical optics; in 1889 he also established the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung (Foundation).
