The All-union Astronomical-Geodesical Society (VAGO) was formed in 1932 on uniting Russian Astronomical Society, the Society of Astronomy-lovers (Obshchestvo lyubitelei astronomii), the Russian Society of the World-knowledge-lovers (Russkoe obstchestvo lyubitelei mirovedeniya), amateur astronomical societies of Nizhnii Novgorod, Samara, Kharkov, Odessa and others. The chairmen: A. A. Mikhailov (1932-1960); D. Ya. Martynov (1961-1975); Yu. D. Bulanzhe (since 1976).
