The collection consists of records generated by Paul Edward Gray while chancellor of MIT. There are also some records from Gray's presidency, 1980-1990.
Records received in 1980, box 1, 1971-1974, consist of a chronological file of outgoing correspondence with people and offices outside of MIT.
Records received in 1981, boxes 2-45, 1965-1979, include subject files of correspondence, reports, working notes, and published material chiefly concerning operation of the Institute, including budget preparation, curriculum development, student affairs, student housing, tuition, personal affairs, recruitment of minorities, and Institute relations with the city of Cambridge.
Records received in 1982, boxes 46-47, 1971-1980, contain chronologically filed correspondence, including correspondence concerning the MIT Council for the Arts; the Edgerton, Germeshausen & Grier (EG&G) Education Center; and inauguration letters.
Records received in 1983, boxes 48-57, 1971-1981, contain internal and outside correspondence, as well as correspondence pertaining to fund raising.
Paul Edward Gray was appointed chancellor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971 as deputy to President Jerome Bert Wiesner. As chancellor, Gray worked closely with Wiesner in all matters pertaining to the Institute. Under Wiesner and Gray the focus of the Institute's research and education programs moved away from military applications towards a variety of social and civilian activities. When Wiesner resigned in 1980, Gray was appointed president of MIT.
