The Electronic Computer Project (ECP) was begun under the aegis of the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1945. Much of the funding for the ECP came from government agencies such as the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, the Office of Naval Research, and various branches of the United States Army. In January of 1952, it culminated in the completion of an electronic computing machine. The Institute Computer was functional until 1960; it was then deposited in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, where it remains today.
