The collection consists of reports on research by faculty and students. Of the fourteen volumes, two were published and twelve are in manuscript form. The records document the development of national science policy, including the beginnings of the National Science Foundatin and evolution of funding for modern academic research, as well as the growth of physics and related research facilities at MIT. The collection consists mainly of correspondence and memoranda documenting the activites of the president and his staff, the definitionand evolution of institute policies, and the allocation of Institute resources. MIT activites are particularly well documented for the World War II period.
