The Atomic Weapons Research Establishment was set up in the late 1940s by the Ministry of Supply. Its functions were scientific and technical research into atomic weapons and testing of Britain's atomic bombs. Under the Atomic Energy Authority (Weapons Group) Act of 1973, the Weapons Group became the responsibility of the Ministry of Defence.
