The collection comprises materials relating to Burcham's scientific career, especially his work in the high voltage laboratory under M. L. E. Oliphant and P. I. Dee which was set up to pursue the finding of Sir. John Cockcroft and E. T. S. Walton in splitting atomic nuclei. Burcham's work is described in his article, "The Cavendish High-Voltage Laboratory (Notes Rec. R. Soc. Lond. 53 (1), 121-134 1999), a copy of which can be found at BCHM 7/2.
William Ernest Burcham was a professor of physics at University of Birmingham, 1951-1998. He was in charge of all matters relating to the Nuffield Cyclotron (except financial and building matters) and especially to strengthen its emerging nuclear physics program. He continued until 1960.
