Sir William Hunter McCrea papers and correspondence, 1890-2004.
This collection includes correspondence, scientific notes, diaries, newspaper clippings, articles by Professor Sir McCrea and others, lecture notes, programs from symposiums, book reviews, and scrapbooks. Significant features include the extent of research records; lecture notes and documentation of work with graduate students at Royal Holloway and Sussex; and records of work as a journal editor, reviewer and referee. The collection also includes a chronological series of over 20 scrapbooks documenting his travels, conferences, presentations, and official business. Some of the topics include the Royal Greenwich Observatory, the Royal Astronomical Society, and cosmology. Important correspondants include R. H. Fowler, E. A. Milne, S. Chandrasekhar, and H. Bondi.
William Hunter McCrea (1904-1999) was a distinguished astrophysicist and mathematician. He completed his undergraduate studies at Cambridge in 1926, and completed his Ph.D. research in 1929 at Gottingen. Professional history: Professor of Mathematics at Queen's University, Belfast, 1936-1943; Chair of Mathematics at Royal Holloway College, University of London, 1944-1966; Astronomy Centre at the University of Sussex, Foundation Professor of Astronomy, 1966-1972, then Emeritus Professor; visiting professor at many universities worldwide. Achievements and awards: FRS, 1952; RAS Gold Medal and knighthood, 1985. Research interests: quantum physics, astronomical physics and cosmology.
