The Institute of Hydrodynamics is a part of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The Institute carries out theoretical and experimental research in the fields of fluid mechanics, rheology, biomechanics, hydrology and environmental hydrodynamics. The Institute was established by the Governmental Commission for Foundation of the Czecheslovak Academy of Sciences in April 1952 which took effect on 1 January 1953. It took its present name in 1958. The founder and first director was Jan Smetana (1953-1962).
